Join advocates, allied professionals, and community leaders from across Virginia as we come together to celebrate our movement, the resiliency of survivors, and build our compassion reservoirs. We will be surrounded by the Roanoke Valley and will have ample opportunities for networking and relationship building while attending an array of workshops designed to expand our knowledge, grow our toolkits, and deepen our understanding of the impact of trauma on diverse survivors.
Keynote Speaker: Tonier “Neen” Cain lived on the streets for twenty nightmarish years. Years filled with hunger, brutality and a lifestyle when described seems unconscio- nable. Incarcerated and pregnant in 2004, someone finally took the time to ask:
“what happened to you” instead of “what’s wrong with you.” It is at that moment she began her journey to become a survivor and for the first time in her life began to live with more hope than fear. The impact of trauma is realized by every age group, race, ethnicity, socio-economic group, gender, community, and workforce. As Ms. Cain shares her story, audience members find themselves challenging theirprofessional and personal beliefs. Her experience illustrates the consequences that untreated trauma has on individuals and society at-large, including mental health problems, addiction, homelessness and incarceration. Her story evokes anger, frustration, sadness, and despair. It often triggers past traumas. It motivates, it empowers and it restores faith in humanity. It reminds us of the tremendous impact one individual can have on the life of another.
