New “Peace Begins at Home” License Plates to Promote Healthy Futures

[RICHMOND, VIRGINIA]--New ”Peace Begins at Home” special license plates that were recently approved by the Virginia General Assembly will help pay for violence prevention programs aimed at stopping sexual and domestic violence before it starts.

Senator Mark Herring (D-Loudoun & Fairfax) and Delegate John O’Bannon III, M.D. (R-Richmond) sponsored legislation during the 2013 Virginia General Assembly to authorize the “Peace Begins at Home” special-interest license plate to support prevention projects among Virginia’s sexual and domestic violence agencies.

“Sadly, 1 in 4 people in Virginia are directly affected by sexual or domestic violence before they reach the age of 18. Fortunately, this type of violence is preventable”, said Senator Mark Herring. “Prevention programs that teach children early and often about respect help lower the chances that they will become perpetrators later on.”

Senator Herring was on scene at the Richmond (Broad Street) Department of Motor Vehicles today to deliver 500 pre-paid orders for the Virginia DMV to begin production of the new “Peace Begins at Home” license plates.

“Prevention programs that promote healthier kids help build healthy futures in Virginia...and that’s good news for all of us,” remarked Senator Herring.

Proceeds from the new “Peace Begins at Home” special license plate will support Virginia’s Building Healthy Futures Fund to help pay for innovative, community-based violence prevention programs that educate Virginia’s children about how to have healthy relationships.

The Building Healthy Futures Fund is a statewide partnership between the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance (Virginia’s leading voice on sexual and domestic violence) and community-based sexual and domestic violence agencies across the Commonwealth.

“Peace Begins at Home” license plates are scheduled to be made available through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles in Spring, 2014. For more information about the Action Alliance or the Building Healthy Futures Fund, visit www.vsdvalliance.org.
